Team 2 in action at our new school site

Some photos from our first week at the Van Asch site. The weather was so beautiful we just had to get out in it!
First up Team 2 visits their buddy classes at Shop Day - thanks Team 3!

Wow our first week is about to begin! Team 2 teachers are looking forward to having a real classroom space again and having all the team together in one block. We will be busy on Monday making the classes ready for you all.
What a huge week we have just had with the snow closure and then rushing to pack everything up and saying good-bye to our Sumner friends and colleagues. Team 2 are very keen to keep in contact with Year 5-6 classes at Sumner especially while we are within walking distance of each other. We had a lovely afternoon with the Sumner buddy classes on Friday and they have written thank you cards to us.
The Friday winter sport was a real bonus for us  - we were able to join in with their teachers and parents running netball, soccer, rugby, basketball and hockey and have a bit of friendly competition.
Special mentions:
Cantamaths: Dougal Shepherd was the only Year 6 student to take up the Year 6 Cantamath challenge for the competition at the CBS arena. Good luck Dougal with your poster  - we know how busy people are so it is extra cool that you have found the time to complete the challenge. Even though the deadline for the competition is closed now, if anyone wants to complete a Cantamath challenge it will be counted as one of your RED Challenges.
RED Challenges: These highly motivated students have already completed the required number of challenges to earn their badges. Badges are not awarded until the 4th term but in the meantime they have been awarded Caught-in-the Act certificates for their effort. Some have gone on to complete more challenges! There is no limit to how many you can do.
Congratulations to Taygen Salt, Alex Yallop, Ben McDonald, Kara Daeche, Alex Goodenbour and Lucia Rapley.
Our beautiful cliff painting will be on our new site so people who have earned Caught in the Acts in the last 6 weeks will be able to move their names up the cliff. Hooray!

Spot the Snowman!



Hi Team 2! Hope you are all keeping warm and dry. What amazing weather. What a year! (I have said this before!) Here are some ideas for things you can be doing at home while school is closed. Some of them are snow related.
Reading: Read the newspaper  - look at weather reports, snow reports, articles and pictures from across the country. Go on-line to www.stuff.co.nz  or www.scoop.co.nz for news. Or visit www.metservice.com for weather reports.
Maths: Make a goal to learn your times tables off by heart (you can use the Times table link on Mathletics for funky tunes that help you remember. If you already know up to 10x then learn 11x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x! work out easy ways of doing this (eg 15x is your 10x plus your 5times). Practice multiplying and dividing large numbers by 10, 100, 1000. Can you do the same with decimals? Go to http://www.mathletics.co.nz/ (see the blog link) or http://www.nzmaths.co.nz/ for extra maths practice (follow the links to the families section).
Writing: Write a snow poem. Remember a poem uses a few words to say a lot, often has similes and metaphors and adjectives, builds a picture or creates a feeling and sounds a bit musical when it's read aloud. Your poem may take any form or you may like to use a set format eg haiku, acrostic, cinquain or even a limerick!

Bits and Bobs

Year 6 Camp 5th-7th and 7th-9th Sept Year 6 students need to get their permission slips and medical forms for camp back by this Friday 19th. 
Weekly camp meetings are being held to give children information and answer questions.
By the end of this week they will know which camp they are going on. Friendships and behaviour will be taken into account in the groups as we want everyone to have a happy camp. We will be unable to fully please everyone however. Children are encouraged to use camp as an opportunity to get to know people better and we hope new friendships are formed as a result.
Unfortunately there is a clash of dates with the Canterbury Winter Tournament which could potentially affect the Junior A netball and soccer teams and the hockey team. Some children may have to accept that they cannot play in that tournament if they qualify. 

Moving to Van Asch
We will be sorry to say goodbye to our Sumner friends but it will be good to have our own spaces and real classrooms again. We will be close enough to Sumner to keep up contact. It has been especially good to have the opportunity to play sport with Sumner. Team 2 have been amazing at Sumner. They have worked hard and played well. They have looked out for each other and maintained their enthusiasm for learning. I know this will continue. They will be excited to see their van Asch classrooms and the beautiful site

Term 3 has taken off!

Wow Team 3  - so much is happening at the moment that I have turned into a whirling dervish (a what??) and haven't had any time to update our blog. Soon though.....photos, news, brainteasers, website links so KEEP CHECKING IN!
Good luck to everyone competing at the Zones on Monday. Fingers crossed for fine weather. Remember to bring your gear. Check in with your class teacher if you are not sure what to bring.
Parents 
 - if  you have offered to help at the Zones, check your child's bag on Wednesday for the information pack. Children in the Zones must be at school for a roll check at 9am.
- Year 6 parents check for a really important  Arthur's Pass camp newsletter on Wednesday too.

Last week:

• Winter Sport went really well on Friday afternoon  - we will do it each Friday that we are at Sumner. People need to bring their gear though! This term it is about practising- next term we will be more competitive leading into the Winter Zones tournament.
• Court Theatre workshops were amazing. Everyone had a lot of fun practising new improv games. The actors are coming back this week to do a follow up.
• Room 4 had a very cool bake-off as part of their descriptions project that they are doing with Mrs Mac. The food was delicious and there was such a variety. They had to taste a variety of food and describe it using all their senses! Check out the blog tomorrow for photos.
• Team 2 walked to Van Asch Deaf School as part of our evacuation practice in case of a tsunami warning. It was ironic that the very next day there was a warning that was quickly cancelled before everyone got to school!

This week:

• We now know that we are staying at Sumner into Term 3 while our Redcliffs site is safety assessed. This means a few more changes. Room 6 are going to have a classroom made for them in the foyer of the new hall. This is to give the Year 6 classes their own space. Sharing the library has worked really well but more space will be lovely. We are hoping the move can happen this Friday
• Room 4 and 6 are looking forward to their trip to Oxford Area School on Tuesday. They are busy planning activities for us and we hope to maintain links with them for the rest of the year. They need to bring a jacket and a good sized lunch and something quiet to entertain them on the bus trip.
• More Court Theatre action on Wednesday. We have some talented actors in Team 2!
• Winter Sport with Sumner on Friday - bring a change of clothes as you won't be able to play in pyjamas! Some people couldn't take part on Friday because they had forgotten mouthguards and shinpads. Rugby and soccer boots are a good idea too
• Friday is the last day of the term. What a term we have had - what a stunning bunch of children we have in Team 2. We are so proud of you all.
